‘I only paint in ink and bleach as I love the permanence of each stroke, the fluidity of the ink and the overall mood it reveals. My paintings are inspired by the monumental ink paintings of Japan and surrounding regions. I love the aesthetic of ink and how it captures a particular mood and moment in time.

I chose to capture Chester in ink and bleach as it felt the most suitable way to capture the mood and atmosphere, especially the British weather which we are all very familiar with! I also believed that the ink providing a lack of colour would keep the pieces timeless, so you can’t really tell what year it is or how people are dressed, only the mood that the city is creates.

Chester is my home and no matter where I go or travel to, coming back is always a heart-warming experience for me. Capturing the city is how I immortalise that feeling.’ Emily Ryan
